Alex Smith

6'4" 220, 3rd Year, 2890 Yards, 16 TDs, 16 Int.

This is the pundits Arizona and Minnesota of last year; the bottom feeder ready to take off and be an elite contender in the N.F.L.

I will tentatively pile on.

Alex Smith's numbers will increase, but, I donıt see San Francisco winning their division or even achieving a winning record.

Gore is awesome and I happen to like both Hicks and Robinson as well.

Jackson increases the talent at wide receiver, and, if he can actually be a team player, could add experience and leadership to a young corps. (Cross your fingers.)

I'm sorry, but, if theyıre better then 1-4 at their bye, I'll be shocked.

2-4 if they surprise a team, which they could, but, 3-4; I'll take that bet right now.

7-4 is realistic after and that would leave them with a winning record, but, they would have to play better then they really are to do this.

They are a team on the rise and the after-bye schedule, excluding division games, is through the bottom half of the N.F.L.; but, don't be fooled, San Francisco is still in the bottom half.

They will not be the only team surprising people.

And, they will have to overcome losing one of the best offensive coordinator's in the game. Hopefully a new system will not derail them and discipline can overcome.

A lot will be asked of Alex Smith and this is a defining season for him.

He was a first pick and to compare him to Carson Palmer, who has such a better supporting cast, is not wholly valid and yetŠ

2nd year 2897 yds., 18 TDs, 18 Int.
3rd year 3836 yds., 34 TDs, 8 Int.

This is the year to make that quantum leap.

If he can throw for 3500 yards and 26 TDs with 10 or less interceptions then this will be a good season especially for a lower pick.

Smith may actually be dropped by his owner after running the gauntlet of St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Baltimore; and his numbers will seem woeful.

He will be a great waiver wire pick-up then.

In fact if he is hanging around in the later rounds then he will be an excellent bench for Donovan McNabb who may play only half a season. The reports on his abilities and maturity are glowing and so far, he looks like the real deal.
