Willie Parker

A champion two years ago, now, a team in decline; or is it?

Losing their coaches, their center, their defensive leader would buckle many teams to their knees.

But, within the heart of these players beats the drive and determination of a champion.

Hines ward is the consummate professional and a team leader. Ben Roethlisberger is a year removed from his mishaps and a wiser and determined player. The Pittsburgh defensive system has always had another to step in when an expensive veteran leaves, just as that veteran did before. Troy Polomalu has emerged as the defensive leader and, as a group, they are still feared and at the statistical top of their game.

The new coaching staff will be competent and in the cauldron of A.F.C. North excellence they will once again pound to the top.

There seem to be certain types of runners emerging in the modern game. The elusive, lightening quick back with excellent hands and downfield vision has become the most dangerous of them all.

Marshall Faulk, Tiki Barber, Brian Westbrook and now ŒFastı Willie Parker a succession of shorter, powerful hybrid runners who blur the lines between back and receiver and excel in both worlds.

Many criticize Parker as a one season wonder and look to the many changes in Pittsburgh as a reason he will fail.

These pundits are simply searching for an excuse.

Roethlisberger will grow this year, be intercepted less, and even improve on what are actually excellent stats from last year. (3513 and 18 TDs) This talented group will thrive against one of the leagues average schedules and though they will probably finish with a 500 season, they will fight each opponent to the very end of regulation.

I actually projected them to win their division.

Parker has the heart of the overlooked, with something to prove.

He has developed moves that fluidly flow around defenders as if they were caught in the quicksand of indecision. He is beginning to remind many of other runners from the past with quick feet and elusive cuts.

He is a workout warrior and each year adds muscle and tone to his frame.

He has become one of the most dangerous backs in football.

Donıt worry about Davenport or Barlow. They will be used and Davenport will be effective, but whatever stats they put up will simply augment what Parker will achieve this season.

He was the fourth best scorer, in our system, with great consistency and an excellent finish. With the difficult schedule ahead there will not be a slacking off of his stats at the end of the season. The two touchdowns and 100 yards he posted in week 17 last year certainly assisted in some championship victories.

He will probably outperform some of those ahead of him, but, will not be chosen before them due to that lack of respect that needs to be overturned through consistent performance.

Last yearıs stats were not an aberration; they were a promise of the greatness to come.
