This is the breakout year of a star. You thought he was cool before, wait until you see this. 2004: Rookie Season: 21st, 59: 1,1,13,14,B,0,7,0,1,0,1,1,0,14,0,7 Those dual touchdown games and constant point contribution left everyone salivating. (Note the week 17 touchdown.) 2005: 18th, 59: 1,0,9,B,1,0,0,20,1,7,0,7,6,2,6 The promise breaks out with a 20 and then builds at the end of the season. 2006: 16th, 65: 1,0,1,10,2,0,9,6,B,10,1,1,2,1,1,0,7,14 What happened? Oh yea Detroit the home of the N.F.L.'s sitcom Millen's Heroes. Still there is some nice things going on here. And, I love the strong finish once again. A guy that knows he needs to step it up for the only playoffs hešs seen in his career; the fantasy playoffs! With a legitimate, fledgling superstar on the other side, a wily over the middle possession receiver with dreams of the big time, a competent veteran quarterback with a chip on his shoulder, three running backs that will keep defenses guessing and a decent coach who can pull these guys together, provide discipline, and the game decisions Martz could not. Mike Martz is the Mad Hatter of the N.F.L. With the weapons he has this year, and his focus on just the offense, he should prove to be at his creative best. The line returns virtually intact and stronger then the previous year. Defenses will be ill prepared for what hits them, especially after the Lions drop the first two games. But as Martz gets warmed up and Marinelli whips a young defense in to shape they will surprise some teams looking past them. It will be into the third half of the season before their opponents really start taking them seriously and by then Detroit will be on its way to the 10 wins Kitna guaranteed and the team wants to deliver. Williams is a solid player, a first round talent that has been pushed out of the media by the rookiešs promise and his pride will fire him up to achievement. He will be the focus of the offense and in the red-zone he will be the go to man. If hešs doubled then teams will be burned by the first really solid receiver core to hit the field in Detroit for years. And after softening them up with Tatum Bell and Kevin Jones, how will Martz be able to keep a tank of a TD specialist on the bench. Roy Williams is poised to take advantage of a truly great emerging team. Hešs 6'2" and a physical specimen. He broke 1300 yards last year and will do even more this year. 8 Tds in his rookie season, the 7 he had last year were just a tease to the greatness yet to come. He is a rising stock and that makes him an excellent risk as opposed to a reach; a good gambler always plays from strength. Credit Millen for finally putting the pieces together, because, if they donšt succeed this year he may finally, actually be out of a job. |
