Character. This elusive ideal is so easy to define and yet so many just donıt get it. Since Benson is already on one of my fantasy teams I will go easy on him. This is his year to step up and fulfill the promise of his draft number and his attitude that has been so oppressive in the locker room and the press. He has a fantastic line, a decent but not star quarterback, receivers that are still trying to find their own ability and a defense that just wonıt quit. Berrian will keep defenses honest and Benson seems to be in the right place at the right time. Jones showed what could be done with this team and now is the time to prove that he has an N.F.L. legacy. If he fails, then he will go down as another loser who was given a shot and then squandered it. This is a Superbowl team, not the happenstance ones that lost the Superbowl in recent years, but a solid contender that may break the recent jinx and be right back in it. The defense is just that good. The coach is just the right man. And Benson does have the physical skills to succeed. Like Jones in New York he is in the unique position of being able to take the reigns of the focus of the offense on this team. It is a challenge that will define him as a player. Bonds may be reviled but the man can turn on a pitch and send it out of the yard. He proved this uncanny ability back in his early or pre-steroid days in Pittsburgh. If muscles real or artificial were all it took then Jose Conseco could have been a sports god instead of a comic side show. It doesnıt really matter what is going on in Bensonıs head, or whether you like him or not. What matters is the opportunity laid out before him and the destiny that awaits. Roll the dice, will he be a head case that destroys the team or the solid contributor of a champion? |
