Maurice Jones-Drew

When he came to Pullman in 2005 and the Cougars, with the remnants of their great 2004 Defense; that beat #4 Texas in the Holiday Bowl, Drew didnšt look special an certainly didnšt live up to the hype.

As usual in that year the Cougars controlled the game and won three quarters only to collapse in the fourth. Donšt ask.

But there must have been some inkling, some spark I missed as I sat bundled up and chewing down excellent Tamales that day.

His explosion last year was nothing short of fantasy magic.

He propelled more then a few lucky owners into the playoffs.

He embodied the definition of the Hybrid player and Jacksonvillešs weirdly compromised offense allowed him to be the true, rookie of the year.

Jack Del Rio is a defensive minded coach who studied at the feet of Carolinašs John Fox.

His first priority is defense and that team has always been solid.

The offense, however, is a mishmash of weird talent and funky decisions.

Fred Taylor is a serviceable old warhorse but how much better would they have been to cut him loose or trade him years ago when he still had cred and get a younger, hungrier back or draft pick.

Matt Jones is a physical freak so why not just turn him into an awesome tight end or give him a shot at quarterback. As a receiver hešs too big to ever really be quick and too inexperienced to ever catch up.

Byron Leftwich is simply not football smart and lacks the heart for the game. David Gerrard with a training camp and confidence as the starter would perform better over time. They were thinking they had the next Culpepper or McNabb and they got an under-achieving, roster filler.

In steps Maurice Jones-Drew, reborn in the hyphenated name, too small to be seriously considered, a later pick hopeful afterthought and yetŠ

A man with the heart of the tinman, the brains of the scarecrow and the courage of the lion! He is the total package.

Stronger and more durable then Westbrook, even better hands then Willie Parker, able to make people forget about Earl Boykins (what?); Hešs The Hybrid Back!

5š7˛ 212, just revel in this stat line:

5th best! 119 points! 0,0,8,9,13,B,7,1,1,7,6,7,6,25,7,16,6

What a champ!

He should be considered higher in the drafts and yet will probably fall for so many pundit reasons: too small, RBBC, tough schedule, rookie luck, etc.

Donšt believe any of it.

Study each team and decide for yourself where the focal point of scoring will be.

Maurice Jones-Drew is the focal point of the scoring for Jacksonville.

Without a more competent quarterback, itšs just not going to get better.

Jack Del Rio deserves respect, but, he needs an offensive coordinator with player choice and imagination. Is Mike Leach available?
