As the perennial cornerstone of one of my keeper leagues the tolerate/disappointed relationship continues for yet another year. This is one of my pet-peeves about keeper leagues. Iıve been stuck with mediocre underperforming players I never would have drafted while the lucky few who had early picks in that first draft have perennial powerhouses and championships. My other keeper league had a policy of being able to pick up a player only when you lost a game. This had an evening effect that allowed the league to be more competitive. But in the Freaks league, once again I will hang my hat on Clinton Portis. He is a lovable character, and will be remembered when others are not. He had the wonderful season in Denver and parlayed that into a nice contract. His tenure in Washington is marred with injuries and a team that somehow mirrors the frenetic mind of its owner. We will always wonder what could have been in Denver, though Champ Bailey did give them the better end of the deal overall. Ladell Betts is an excellent back-up, one of the best and he will always be so. Though he spells Portis he also steals valuable touchdowns from him too. He has battled the injury bug of late but I think the conditioning program forced on him in recovery will leave him in better shape to attack this season then he has been, in recent years. His love of the spotlight will engender the desire within him to be in the highlight films to give more meaning to his dress-up antics. With a near rookie quarterback, who should perform competently this year, I think that Portis will do very well. Iım looking for a bounce back year fantasy wise for my star; after all what alternative do I have? He is a talented bruiser and great around the goal line. The team has a moderate schedule and lots of veterans. Gibbs is an excellent coach who may need a few years to figure out the game but when he does he wins championships. And, he usually does it running with an excellent back. (Remember Riggs anyone?) Washington will perform better this year then the pundits think, who are always looking at the past and lacking the balls to have any real vision into the future. I think they stand the best chance to win the division over any of their foes. They are a model of stability and a cornucopia of talent just waiting to boil into a gumbo of mouthwatering proportions. I suppose because itıs Washington DC you thought I was going to say Minestrone! Go ahead and expect, more evenly spaced, but, these kind of stats this year: 2005: 6th place, 98 total: 2,1,B,1,2,2,20,0,7,10,1,1,16,8,2,11,14 |
